Claude AI: A Real In-Use Example of AI at Work in Residential Construction

Claude AI: A real in-use example of AI at work in residential construction.

Andrew Crosby is fairly new into Claude. He asked for me to provide an example of what I use it for. There are loads of examples but I thought this one was a good one relating to construction. For me this is an admin task, checking something out to help explain.

A contractor is working radially 4+ m from a “live part”. The electricity distribution company believed they were working alongside overhead conductors. So they set about getting some measurements. The measurements were listed by an engineer and on a formal engineering report.

I popped it into my “electrical engineering” project and asked for a visualisation so that I could clearly see the graphic. I emailed it to a specialist who said, hey it is a live part, consider “whack down the scaff by 200 mm” and all sorted. He did note it was compliant against 9.2.

What was my prompt?

“Please refer to my engineering measurement report. Visualise it against Table 2 in NZECP 34 for LV lines and also against section 9.2 of the same where the actual conductive part is a live part and faces the scaffolding.”

The graphics show Claude’s output. The blue lines represent the scaffolding, the beige is the building, the red box is the exclusion zone. There is one for Table 2 compliance and one for Section 9.2.

Note: the conductors run AWAY from the structure. This is a real use case and made it easier for me to explain the situation to someone. Claude is well trained in my projects so that may have assisted in a clear response.

Kirsty Merriman
For years I would plan houses, travel widely and observe communities. I also had the privilege of working for New Zealand's largest dairy company in both New Zealand and Malaysia. All the while supported by my husband and young daughter. After a while, our roles swapped and we moved to the Arabian Gulf. Meanwhile my passion for property and communities continued to simmer.

Along came COVID and had no choice but to pivot... in the words of Robert Frost, I looked for and "found the road less travelled by" and decided that maybe I could "make [a] the difference".

I look for to find insights and built a few of the houses that we need. This means a saleable house and a profitable and sustainable business.
