Uncovering Construction Chaos in Sunshine – the Site Inspector: 12 January 2024

A good call to arms by the Site Inspector (SI). I have been watching his videos for many months now.

Australia has some serious compliance issues and SI holds nothing back.

NZ has its own issues. I have seen first hand how everyone rushes to cover their own backs. Including the lack of support the general public has for accountability — the Dunedin Stonewood build being a direct example.

I have quietly heard many complaints about the public systems to protect against shoddy workmanship plus the results of what happens when those complaints fall on deaf ears and the problems grow.

When the public is let down by the systems put in place to protect them this happens. It is the homeowners who wear the stress of the remediation process.

Building a home is not like buying a car. If you purchased a car, it wouldn’t get past ‘go’ with water ingress issues!

About the author
Kirsty Merriman
For years I would plan houses, travel widely and observe communities. I also had the privilege of working for New Zealand's largest dairy company in both New Zealand and Malaysia. All the while supported by my husband and young daughter. After a while, our roles swapped and we moved to the Arabian Gulf. Meanwhile my passion for property and communities continued to simmer.

Along came COVID and had no choice but to pivot... in the words of Robert Frost, I looked for and "found the road less travelled by" and decided that maybe I could "make [a] the difference".

I look for to find insights and built a few of the houses that we need. This means a saleable house and a profitable and sustainable business.
