Accountability for Unethical Behaviour: 8 October 2024

Some may know that my two year-old fourteen unit development is going through extensive preventative maintenance.
Essentially it is a 90% reclad, removal and redo of external stairs, replacement of some windows.
It is also a good news story of a construction company putting things right and not playing games. We need more of that.
The journey to get the issues acknowledged was arduous. There was ZERO support from groups supposed to act in the “best interests of the public” and previous management making it impossible to be heard.
It required a strategic set of moves.
To be heard, it was the sharing of a Dunedin couple’s journey via mainstream media so I decided to follow their approach.
By:
(1) giving up on the public system and moving to top-shelf private building surveyors, and,
(2) the company responsible for the build had a complete change of management with a new approach to customers,
We reached a point where we could (in principle) agree around the table that all would be remediated.
On fourteen new homes we had unethical behaviour (substitutions and omissions), workmanship that was beyond poor, and other issues.
The best outcome for EVERYONE is acceptance, the avoidance of litigation, and sharing our journey’s to help those who follow.
I am so thankful for the Dunedin group for sharing (Dave and Gemma O’Neill), the past has happened but we can try to stop unethical AND poor quality work from continuing into our future.
