😔 Hard lessons in the construction industry: 24 February, 2025

Just read about Louis Wu, director of Top Garden landscaping, who’s been left over $100K out of pocket, plus another $100K in legal fees trying to chase payment from a failed project manager.

No doubt many have been in this position.

For Mr Wu is looks like things went badly wrong on a Queenstown development. Even with two Building Disputes Tribunal decisions and two High Court orders in his favour, payment never came (been there done that myself and still going).

It’s tough to see good contractors who do quality work end up in these situations saying that he can’t trust anyone now.

The reality is harsh but true – in today’s climate, tight contracts, clear payment terms, and proper due diligence aren’t just good business practice… they’re survival tools.

For years I would plan houses, travel widely and observe communities. I also had the privilege of working for New Zealand's largest dairy company in both New Zealand and Malaysia. All the while supported by my husband and young daughter. After a while, our roles swapped and we moved to the Arabian Gulf. Meanwhile my passion for property and communities continued to simmer.

Along came COVID and had no choice but to pivot... in the words of Robert Frost, I looked for and "found the road less travelled by" and decided that maybe I could "make [a] the difference".

I look for to find insights and built a few of the houses that we need. This means a saleable house and a profitable and sustainable business.
